Abstract

Discrimination against women in Saudi Arabia, rooted in the patriarchal system and conservative interpretation of Sharia law, remains a major concern for the UN despite Saudi Arabia's ratification of the 1979 CEDAW Convention in 2000. This study aims to evaluate the UN's efforts through CEDAW in overcoming discrimination by highlighting the progress of the Vision 2030 reforms and the challenges that exist. Using a qualitative approach involving document analysis and case studies on reforms in Saudi Arabia, the results show that the UN's strategy of monitoring periodic reports and final recommendations has encouraged some progress. The conclusion of this study confirms that the UN strategy is persuasive in nature and requires collaboration with the reinterpretation of Sharia law.
